To have a meaningful comparison of pet food, you have to look at the guaranteed analysis numbers on a “Dry Matter Basis”. This simply means that you are evaluating the food as if it contained no water. As different brands have different percentages of water, this can skew the results when comparing. Since water has no protein, fat or fiber, you have to analyze the food without water in the mix.
