“This is Dr. Falconer. You know, I’ve always admired Steve Brown for being the pioneer that started the commercial raw pet food industry. He had to educate himself, amass a huge library of resources, and enter into an industry that was locked into kibble and canned food, period. Imagine the guts and brains it took to enter a multi-million dollar (at the time) “cash cow” that looked down its nose at the whole idea of frozen raw food!
But, he persisted, and actually set the stage for all the rest who continue to follow in his footsteps today. His diets are still keeping pets shiny and vital a couple of decades later, when most people accept raw food as a valid source of nutrition. I recommended them early on and I recommend them today. Steve’s is high quality, clean, balanced food, and you’ll see your dog or cat pick up a bright shine within a few weeks of feeding them this. Just remember to get into a rotation. Every 3-4 weeks, I recommend you change the protein source, and you can easily do this with Steve’s Real Food.”

Feed and Transitioning
If you've never fed raw before, you may be surprised as you watch your dog’s health improve while they transition to a healthier diet. When you feed your pet a raw diet, they will often require less food than if you were to feed them a kibble/grain-based diet, because the food has so much more nutritional value. There are a few factors that will affect the recommended amount to feed your pet, such as age, activity level, and weight goals. We use the bodyweight percentage rule, which estimates feeding amounts based on the weight of your pet.
For example, if you have a 50-pound adult dog, you'd feed them 2.5% of their body weight, which is 1.25 lb (daily).
50lbs x 2.5% = 1.25 lbs
You want to transition your pet to raw food slowly to prevent stomachaches and loose stools. Start by mixing 1 part Steve’s with 3 parts of the food you are currently feeding. Slowly increase the amount of Steve’s while reducing their previous food over the course of 2 to 4 weeks. Monitor their temperament and stools to ensure they are transitioning well. An example transitioning schedule is below:
Currently feeding 1 Cup dry kibble and no Raw to a 40lb dog. The dog will end up eating 1 lb of raw per day and no kibble.
Week 1 - Feed 3/4 Cup dry kibble and 1/4 lb raw
Week 2 - Feed 1/2 Cup dry kibble and 1/2 lb raw
Week 3 - Feed 1/4 Cup dry kibble and 3/4 lb raw
Week 4 - Feed 0 Cups dry kibble and 1 lb raw
Some dogs are able to transition faster than 4 weeks. Simply keep an eye on their stool. If it gets loose, slow the transitioning down. If it you see no change or it gets smaller and firmer than you can speed the process up.
More transitioning tips are on our “Starting on Raw Food” page.
